State Senators Dan Rutherford and Christine Radogno are touring the state trying to gain support for legislation that would require a longterm plan for the state's prison system. The lawmakers want to put a moratorium on closing any prisons until a plan is in place. This is reaction to the governor's decision last week to close the Pontiac Correctional Center. Rutherford says a longterm plan makes sense.

Radongo tells WJBC's Steve Fast, the state has no real direction for the Department of Corrections and its growing population.

The Vandalia prison closed a few years ago and earlier this year, Stateville was on the chopping block. The governor plans to hold public hearings about the Pontiac prison.

The development, hosting and maintenance of Senator Rutherford's web site are not paid for with taxpayer dollars. The phone line and internet service for Senator Rutherford's e-mails are also not paid for at taxpayer expense.
