Rutherford says closing Pontiac prison makes no sense

PONTIAC, Ill. (AP) — State Senator Dan Rutherford says he supported the construction of the Thomson Correctional Facility in northern Illinois.

The Pontiac Republican says Thomson was built to alleviate overcrowding at state prisons -- not to prompt the closure of existing, well-functioning facilities.

Rutherford spoke at a news conference Tuesday, a day after it was revealed the Illinois Department of Corrections wants to close the Pontiac Correctional Center.

Under the plan, many Pontiac inmates would move to the new-but-never-used maximum facility jailhouse in Thomson.

Rutherford says he sees no logic to closing the Pontiac prison. Although the institution is more than 130 years old, he says the prison has been updated to be made both safe and modern.
