PONTIAC -- Efforts are under way
to restore the last remaining house in Livingston County
that has a tie to Abraham Lincoln.
The Livingston County Historical
Society wants to extensively remodel the Jason W.
Strevell house, 401 W. Livingston St., which was an

Rather than talking of closing the
Kankakee Minimum Security Unit of the Dwight women's
prison, the Illinois Department of Corrections should be
developing a strategic, long-range plan for prison
operations, state Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Pontiac, said
Thursday.

State Sen. Dan Rutherford has a
good idea to put more money in the state coffers -- and
it would benefit Livingston County, too.
Rutherford, a Republican from
Chenoa, has suggested selling the warden's home, which
is in a residential area of Pontiac.
The suggestions were made in a
letter to Gov. Pat Quinn that calls into question the
practice of the state providing residences for wardens.
Selling the state-owned warden's
home -- which Warden Guy Pierce isn't living in anyway
-- would put it back on local tax rolls. That means
local taxing districts, from Livingston County to
Pontiac to school districts, would benefit from
increased tax revenue.

We’re still waiting for a
comprehensive study of the state’s prison facilities,
outlining how they can be put to best use and how to
save money without compromising safety.
Although talk of closing Pontiac
prison faded with the departure of former Gov. Rod
Blagojevich, the idea of closing certain prisons seems
to pop up periodically no matter who is governor —
generally with little or no detailed analysis, other
than political analysis.
At one time, then Gov. George Ryan
proposed closing Vienna Correctional Center in southern
Illinois. In addition to Pontiac in 2004 and 2008,
Blagojevich also threatened at one time to close
Vandalia Correctional Center and Stateville prison near
Joliet.
