Livingston Co. wants to restore home with Lincoln ties - Pantagraph December 13, 2009

PONTIAC -- Efforts are under way to restore the last remaining house in Livingston County that has a tie to Abraham Lincoln.

The Livingston County Historical Society wants to extensively remodel the Jason W. Strevell house, 401 W. Livingston St., which was an apartment building before the society bought it a year ago.

Society member Donovan Gardner said the group wants to bring the house back to its original glory.

Long-range plan needed for prisons - Daily Journal December 11, 2009

Rather than talking of closing the Kankakee Minimum Security Unit of the Dwight women's prison, the Illinois Department of Corrections should be developing a strategic, long-range plan for prison operations, state Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Pontiac, said Thursday.

Rutherford reminds veterans’ children about University of Illinois Tuition Waiver

PONTIAC, IL – State Senator Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac) reminds students who are the children of veterans to apply for the University of Illinois’ Children of Veterans Tuition Waiver.

Students need to apply before March 1, 2010 and video footage about the waiver program can be found on Senator Rutherford’s YouTube channel. For further information, go to the University of Illinois' Web site  or call the Office of Student Financial Aid at 1-217-333-0100.

State should consider selling wardens' homes - Pantagraph December 8, 2009

State Sen. Dan Rutherford has a good idea to put more money in the state coffers -- and it would benefit Livingston County, too.

Rutherford, a Republican from Chenoa, has suggested selling the warden's home, which is in a residential area of Pontiac.

The suggestions were made in a letter to Gov. Pat Quinn that calls into question the practice of the state providing residences for wardens.

Selling the state-owned warden's home -- which Warden Guy Pierce isn't living in anyway -- would put it back on local tax rolls. That means local taxing districts, from Livingston County to Pontiac to school districts, would benefit from increased tax revenue.

State still needs comprehensive plan for prisons - Pantagraph December 1, 2009

We’re still waiting for a comprehensive study of the state’s prison facilities, outlining how they can be put to best use and how to save money without compromising safety.

Although talk of closing Pontiac prison faded with the departure of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the idea of closing certain prisons seems to pop up periodically no matter who is governor — generally with little or no detailed analysis, other than political analysis.

At one time, then Gov. George Ryan proposed closing Vienna Correctional Center in southern Illinois. In addition to Pontiac in 2004 and 2008, Blagojevich also threatened at one time to close Vandalia Correctional Center and Stateville prison near Joliet.
