ID Theft Alert

Identity theft is becoming a growing problem in our state and country. There are some safeguards that people can use to try to deter identity theft. There are also some very important steps for them to take if they become a victim.

To help deter identity theft, protect personal information. People need to shred documents that contain personal information; do not give out personal information over the phone or Internet unless they have initiated the contact and know who they are dealing with; never click on links in unsolicited emails; keep personal information in a secure place.

If a person becomes a victim of identity theft, they should file an ID theft complaint with the Federal Trade commission, file a police report and notify creditors. Do not delay in taking these actions. The quicker the proper authorities are notified the less damage that can be done.

For more information about stopping and reporting identity theft, as well as complaint forms and phone numbers for reporting identity theft, go to: www.ftc.gov/idtheft
